A number of volumes all over a hundred years old are now available at Jersey City Free Books, 297 Griffith St.

Moving to a much smaller space forced long-time residents to part with these books. Their wish is for the volumes to be rehomed and so continue to be appreciated. Jersey City Free Books will consider requests from schools, libraries, scholars and artists. Items from the collection will be distributed without charge to where they can best be used.

Available now at Jersey City Free Books! Tom Kean: From the New Jersey Statehouse to the 9-11 Commission

Nearly 100 new copies of Governor Tom Kean: From the New Jersey Statehouse to the 9-11 Commission by Alvin S. Felzenberg are available at Jersey City Free Books, 297 Griffith St.

As a two-term governor, Tom Kean already cast a large shadow. Even so, this very distinguished career again grew when as chairman of the 9/11 Commission he ascended a global stage. Tasked to investigate the first attack on the US mainland in nearly 200 years, the Kean Commission concluded that the failure of national security made terrorist acts possible.

Tom Kean’s political roots run deep in Hudson County. Kean became NJ Senate President with the assistance of Jersey City’s Dave Friedland — of Teamsters and shark attack fame. During Kean’s campaign for re-election as governor, Bobby Jackson, Jersey City councilman and publisher of the Urban Times News, and Julian Robinson, first African-American candidate for mayor of Jersey City, were prominent supporters. Jerry McCann (then mayor of Jersey City) took Tom Kean on a tour of the bars of Jersey City and Bayonne after the governor’s opponent’s ad asked, ”Can you see him having a beer in a bar in Bayonne?”

Jersey City Free Books is a resource for students and serious readers. We cannot receive “light” fiction — Mysteries, Thrillers and Romances — or Self-help titles, cook books or children’s books. Since they can’t be used by current students, text books over three years old are not accepted, either. We also can’t take damaged books, or encyclopedias,  Computer books can’t be more than a couple of years old.

Students and other serious readers in your community urgently need these books: solid recent non-fiction, including college text books less than three years old and recent quality Fiction. Jersey City Free Books can use books on history, biographies of historical figures (not celebrities), dictionaries, language learning books and media, computer books less than three years old, recent technical and scientific books and books on photography or art.

Comic books, Graphic Novels, video and game DVDs are great for our flea market fundraisers.

Jersey City Free Books is very happy to get old black and white photos — snapshots.

Tropical fish magazines, bird magazines and pet magazines are great. Unfortunately, Jersey City Free Books can’t take any other periodicals.

Unfortunately we don’t have a vehicle and so are not able to pick up books.

If you are bringing  a quantity of books, they need to be packed  spine up in boxes that you can leave.  The boxes for copy paper work great.  We cannot accept a large number of books in garbage bags, loose or in containers that have to be returned to you.

Here’s a Link to a PDF of a flyer for Jersey City Free Books. If anyone can print some out and then post them at school, work, the neighborhood, whatever, that would be great. If it’s possible to print a few extra and to bring them to Jersey City Free Books for us to hand out, WUNDERBAR!

Jersey City Free Books now helping community groups in the Philippines.

pagasa_schoola

Jersey City Free Books is assisting two community groups in the Philippines. The Marawi Project serves the rural south through a mobile public library and a reading room. The other is Pag-Asa Island (Hope Island) School Palawan. The isolated location, a municipality of the Kalayaan group, is 38 hours by boat from the main island, 3 hours by prop. plane. The 200 residents have no Internet access.

China’s recent territorial claims in the South China Sea directly affect the people of Pag-Asa Island.

If anyone has children’s books to donate, that will be a huge help. Sports equipment — baseball, volleyball, etc. — is also greatly appreciated. Please bring items to Jersey City Free Books at 297 Griffith St., Jersey City, NJ 07307. Hours are posted at the Main Page.
