Nearly 100 new copies of Governor Tom Kean: From the New Jersey Statehouse to the 9-11 Commission by Alvin S. Felzenberg are available at Jersey City Free Books, 297 Griffith St.
As a two-term governor, Tom Kean already cast a large shadow. Even so, this very distinguished career again grew when as chairman of the 9/11 Commission he ascended a global stage. Tasked to investigate the first attack on the US mainland in nearly 200 years, the Kean Commission concluded that the failure of national security made terrorist acts possible.
Tom Kean’s political roots run deep in Hudson County. Kean became NJ Senate President with the assistance of Jersey City’s Dave Friedland — of Teamsters and shark attack fame. During Kean’s campaign for re-election as governor, Bobby Jackson, Jersey City councilman and publisher of the Urban Times News, and Julian Robinson, first African-American candidate for mayor of Jersey City, were prominent supporters. Jerry McCann (then mayor of Jersey City) took Tom Kean on a tour of the bars of Jersey City and Bayonne after the governor’s opponent’s ad asked, ”Can you see him having a beer in a bar in Bayonne?”
